Stephenson Halliday provided specialist support to this project as a subcontractor to Ramboll Environment for Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd (SHETL).

The project was funded by Ofgem under its Visual Impact Provision (VIP) funding programme to investigate opportunities to replace the pylons that have the greatest visual effect with underground connections. Stephenson Halliday undertook the LVIA for the LT183 & LT184 VISTA contract. The LVIA considered the effects of the proposed undergrounding of two sections of double-circuit 132-kV line within the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, UK, totalling 12 km in length. While the effects of such a change appear beneficial, a particular focus of the assessment was on the location and design of the new cable sealing end structures to make the overhead-to-cable transition. Badly sited, these could have offset much of the benefits of pylon removal.
