Thomas Armstrong has been extracting sand from a ridge of fluvio-glacial sand near Westnewton, Cumbria, UK, for over 50 years.

A processing bagging plant at nearby New Cowper had been supplied from a number of satellite quarries. As the supply from the last of these was close to exhaustion, Stephenson Halliday prepared a scheme for relocating all processing and bagging activities to Overby Quarry, together with significant extensions to that quarry. The application was for a 4.5 million cubic metre extension to the quarry with a new access and new buildings for all processing plant. The application was accompanied by an environmental statement that we also prepared. The scheme was granted permission, the new access and buildings for the processing activities were constructed and the first of the extensions is being worked.
